Come Cover Me: Eva Urbanova does some Nightwish

Apparently, if you're a Tarjaholic you might be up in arms over this interview snippet in which Czeck opera diva Eva Urbanova states that she doesn't think Tarja is a great singer.

I am so over Nighwish/Tarja dramas that I don't really care who says what about whom anymore, but listening to Eva's covers of two NW songs was an interesting experience indeed.

First up, "Deep Silent Complete".  Vocally, it's fine-ish.  Performance-wise, way to turn a great metal song into a pop parody with silly back-up dancers!  Ridiculous!  Check it.

Eva also covers "Wish I Had an Angel" and I have to say this is pretty bad to my ears.  It completely loses all impact in her translation of the song.  It's awful. It's hideous.

What do you think?

Wow.... both covers are no good... doesn't do Nightwish or Tarja any justice at all!

BTW, this Eva thinks she is better than Tarja!?? No wonder the fans are reacting the way they are. As an artist, you may have your own opinions about someone else, but no one can deny that Tarja has a very unique voice, and putting her down like that is just bad publicity! Whatever, she is full of shit man... these covers are a complete disgrace to both NW and Tarja.

I think the covers sound really bad. Also she said she'd like to join NW. God! It's better to have Anette around than Ms Urbanová.
I wish you could speak Czech so you could laugh at the comments made on WSCZ Tarja's official fanclub. :D

My aunt sings with Eva in the Czech National Theater Opera but as she says she is great opera singer but does horrible covers. Also Eva is always talking about NW and Tarja as great artists and how she loves and admires them. That was actually reason why my aunt asked me about NW and I gave her Tarja's WLB CD.

Here you have Walking in the Air. Another bad piece IMO.

BTW Eva also performed WIHAA during the hockey awards ceremony. Poor hockey players. For the first time ever I felt sorry for them. :D

Nah, I don't think either can do justice to Tarja's interpretations: Anette lacks most in the realm of technique and Eva's main weakness is the lack of expressive singing, but to be honest, neither is her interpretation great from a technical point of view, either, in those covers at least, while Anette's interpretations are also quite debatable.

What both really prove that Tarja is just not as easy to replace as many people have claimed. Not by a random opera singer and not by an untrained one. Tarja worked hard for many years on her classical technique, and again many years to adapt it to the music of Nightwish. Also, she's got a natural instinct That's what almost everybody overlooks. Singers as gifted and skilled as her are really rare. While heaps of (mostly) not-so-great (mostly) amateur covers (and almost no known singers ready to take the songs on) should already have given people a hint, it took both Anette and Eva to prove how unique Tarja really is.

That said, Eva would probably do well as a Therion singer. They have to be technically proficient, but an empathic, sensitive interpretation is not what is expected of them ...
